What is lymphatic drainage?
Lymphatic drainage, often called manual lymphatic drainage, is a specialised type of medical massage that can help stimulate the lymphatic system by directing lymph towards draining lymph nodes. Slow, light strokes are used to stretch the skin fascia and facilitate lymph moving in the dermal (skin) lymphatics

Compression stockings work by applying pressure on the veins and tissues in your feet and legs to optimise blood flow, or circulation. Compression socks will also aid in the prevention of blood clots, reduce pain and fatigue, and minimise swelling.
Please note Lymphoedema therapists are skilled at garment prescription and can advise on garment style and whether a pre-sized (Ready to Wear) garment or a custom made garment is required. Garment fabric may be constructed as a circular knit or a flat knit design.
Primary lymphoedema is caused by a change in a person's genes, so the lymph vessels are malformed. It may mean that the lymphatic vessels and nodes did not grow and develop as they should have from birth, or it is a condition that can occur later in life.
Primary lymphoedema means that the defective genes cause the lymphatic system not to drain as it should, causing a build-up of fluid and swelling in the tissues.
In this condition, there is usually either:
* Obstruction of the lymph nodes, which means that the lymph cannot effectively drain through the vessels to the nodes, and the waste will not be removed;
* A malformation of the lymph vessels or nodes. This will cause the lymph drainage to be slow, and often the lymph will settle within the vessels without moving, causing swelling; and
* The underdevelopment of lymph vessels means the lymph will move much more slowly through them.
Primary lymphoedema is usually congenital, and there is no cure for this condition; however, the massage techniques of a lymphatic drainage treatment, plus other aids such as compression stockings, will usually help.
Secondary lymphoedema is the swelling of the tissues due to the build-up of lymph, as we have discussed previously. This can be caused by surgery, scar tissue, injury, infection, and obesity, among other things. Secondary lymphoedema can affect anyone and is usually a shorter-term condition and easier to treat.
Lymphoedema disease is a chronic disease whereby the accumulation of lymph builds up so much that it remains stagnant in the area and is not removed. This causes the invasion of bacteria, which multiplies and can bring about conditions such as cellulitis.
Chronic lymphoedema can make the skin thicker, coarser, and more prone to injury, trauma, or infection.
Pneumatic Compression therapy is the process of applying external pressure to the limbs to promote the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid from the extremities of the body.
Improved lymphatic flow, skin condition and edema are reduced, and the sufferer will have increased mobility and range of motion will improve.
Compression (pneumatic) pumps can be effective in the treatment of lymphedema, lipedema and chronic venous insufficiency when prescribed and operated properly.

Anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system. Recognising and treating chronic oedemas including lymphoedema, lipoedema, obesity-related, dependant oedema, and venous disease. Delivery of manual lymphatic drainage for those with a normal (e.g. post cosmetic surgery when the lymphatic system is intact) and abnormal (e.g post cancer where the lymphatic system may be functioning abnormally) lymphatic systems. Scar management techniques post surgery and radiation. Application of compression bandaging (two layer and multi-layer). Post-Mastectomy
Manual lymphatic drainage massage can decrease the severity of lymphoedema promoting healing and reducing discomfort. Pain alleviation by reducing the swelling. Manual lymphatic drainage massage prevents fluid buildup after surgery and flushes out unwanted cellular debris and excess fluid at a fast rate. This helps reduce pain, bruising, swelling, and prevents fibrosis scar tissue development beneath the skin and fastens healing, technique involves gentle, rhythmic movements that help to stimulate lymphatic flow and reduce swelling, encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid.
Our Lymph capillaries and lymph vessels are responsible to pick up waste and toxins around the body. These substances are absorbed through the walls of these lymphatic vessels.
The lymphatic vessels continue their journey around the body, continuously collecting waste and tissue fluid. Every so often, the vessels will enter a lymph node. Within the lymph node, a good proportion of the waste that has been picked up is filtered out and engulfed by the lymphocytes within, so when the lymph exits the lymph node, it is cleaner and purer. The lymphatic vessels then pick up waste, and the lymph nodes continue to filter it out. The vessels then reach the lymphatic ducts.
